Scientists call for limiting common antimicrobial chemicals

A consensus statement signed by over 200 scientists, physicians, and public health professionals asserts that common antimicrobial products can do more harm than good. The statement, published today in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives, calls for greater caution in using antimicrobial chemicals in everyday products.


The Six Classes video series launch

The Green Science Policy Institute, an HRCS client, will premiere its Six Classes video series and educational website this summer. Each hour-long webcast will feature three short videos and live conversation with distinguished scientists and thought leaders about chemical classes of concern, where they are used, why they are harmful, and how to reduce their use in everyday products.


Saturday’s March for Science Los Angeles expects over 50,000

The March for Science Los Angeles is projected to be the second largest of over 500 March for Science events happening worldwide on April 22 (Earth Day), behind only the national March for Science in Washington, DC. Over 50,000 people are anticipated to march in Los Angeles, including scientists, educators, students, advocates, and community leaders.


People-centered language recommendations for sleep research communication

An article by HRCS Director Rebecca Fuoco, MPH has been published in the journal SLEEP. Guidance for improving the language researchers use to talk to and about people with studied health conditions has been issued in several fields, including psychology and endocrinology. This article is the first to develop such recommendations for the sleep research field. Additionally, these guidelines combine people-first terminology with language considerations around neutrality and autonomy into a novel and comprehensive “people-centered” approach.


March for Science Los Angeles to take place on April 22 in downtown Los Angeles

The March for Science Los Angeles will take place on April 22, 2017 (Earth Day), beginning at 9:00am at Pershing Square Park in downtown Los Angeles. Marchers will then make their way to City Hall. So far, over 13,000 people have pledged to march, while nearly 50,000 others have expressed their interest in participating. They will unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call on policymakers to champion and fund science that upholds the common good and to advocate for evidence-based policies in the public interest at the local, state, and national levels.
